Channel Tunnel Security Tightened: Migrant Crisis

 



Eurotunnel migrant crisis: Alarming increase number of migrants trying to reach the United Kingdom through Channel Tunnel has been worsening.

  • This year alone, Eurotunnel has intercepted 37,000 migrants, the operator said.

France, Le tunnel sous la Manche is a 50.5-kilometre rail tunnel linking Folkestone, Kent, in the United Kingdom, with Coquelles, Pas-de-Calais, near Calais in northern France, beneath the English Channel at the Strait of Dover.

“Initially 38 Le Shuttle locomotives were commissioned, with one at each end of a shuttle train. The shuttles have two separate halves: single and double deck.”

Each half has two loading/unloading wagons and 12 carrier wagons. Eurotunnel’s original order was for nine tourist shuttles.

On tightening Channel Tunnel Security measures-French has sent additional 120 police officers to tighten security measures safeguarding the Eurotunnel terminal.

Extra security measures to stop migrants attempting to enter Britain illegally through the Channel tunnel. According to report, pressure is being brought to bear on Eurotunnel Channel Tunnel to ensure it rapidly installs the new fencing Britain has agreed to pay for.

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said management company Eurotunnel “must also take responsibility” for securing its premises, which migrants have tried to enter in a bid to reach Britain, resulting in one death on Tuesday.

United Kingdom previously has pledged £7 million (9.9 million euros) – for almost two kilometers of fence around the Eurotunnel site at Coquelles. The funding is on top of £12 million (17 million euros) announced last September.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron said such security measures include added fencing. He also acknowledged the massive disruption in traffic because of the flood of migrants.

The tunnel carries high-speed Eurostar passenger trains, the Eurotunnel Shuttle for road vehicles, the largest such transport in the world—and international freight trains. The tunnel connects end-to-end with the LGV Nord and High Speed 1 high-speed railway lines. Image / Reuters
